After more than five years in early access and roughly 17 million copies sold, Valheim stops being a work in progress tomorrow. Version 1.0 launches September 9 with the Deep North, the last biome Iron Gate ever planned for its Viking survival hit, and for the first time the game arrives natively on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, joining PC, Xbox, Mac, and Linux in one world with full crossplay across all six.

What's Actually in the Deep North

The Deep North sits at the northern edge of the map and closes out the biome roadmap Iron Gate has been building since 2021. It adds two new dungeon types, the underground Winding Tunnels and the fortress-like Gates of Mörkhalla, plus a fresh wave of hostile fauna, including the Gammeltroll, an ancient troll the size of a small hill that turns to stone the instant it dies. Tameable Moose and coastal Seals give players their first new rideable and farmable animals in years, and a new Nord weapon and armor line, forged from a material called Bloodgold, arrives alongside the Hooded Lantern and a new crafting station, the Frost Foundry.

PS5 and Switch 2 Get In Five Years Late, and It Was Worth the Wait

Valheim has been a PC and Xbox game since 2021, so a PlayStation 5 version arriving at all is news on its own. A Switch 2 version is an even bigger deal: it puts Iron Gate's sprawling, physics-heavy survival world on hardware barely six months old, running alongside the same crafting, building, and boss fights that made the PC version a phenomenon. All six platforms share crossplay from day one, meaning a group can mix a PC host, two Xbox players, a PS5 player, and a Switch 2 player in a single world with no workarounds.

The Price Jumps to $29.99 at Launch

Iron Gate is treating September 9 as the moment Valheim stops being a discounted early access project and becomes a finished game. The price rises from $19.99, where it has sat since 2021, to $29.99 across Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation the moment 1.0 goes live. Anyone who already owns the game keeps it forever at no extra charge; the increase only applies to new purchases going forward. It is a rare case this year of a price change you can actually get ahead of: if you have been meaning to try Valheim, tonight is the last chance at the old price.

The Rest of a Stacked Release Tuesday

Valheim was not the only thing landing this week. Six games hit PS5 on September 8 alone, headlined by Halloween: The Game, which turns the slasher franchise into asymmetric multiplayer, and Mewgenics, the cat-breeding tactical roguelike from Edmund McMillen that built a following on PC earlier this year before making its console debut. On the subscription side, Xbox Game Pass added Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War the same day, while Cyberpunk 2077 and Dead Cells are both scheduled to leave the service on September 15.

GTA 6 also made a brief, unannounced cameo at Sony's September 3 State of Play, a short teaser rather than new gameplay, with the November 19 release date unchanged. We covered the full gameplay reveal and what changed for buyers in our console price rollback breakdown two days earlier.

Nvidia Won't Ship a New Gaming GPU All Year

The same memory shortage that has been driving every console price swing we have covered this year just claimed a bigger target. For the first time since 1999, Nvidia is not releasing a new gaming GPU architecture in 2026 at all. The company is steering scarce DRAM and HBM supply toward its far more profitable AI accelerators instead of consumer graphics cards, the same underlying shortage Sony and Microsoft both cited for their console price hikes this year. If you are building or upgrading a gaming PC in the near term, the current generation of cards is what you are working with for a while longer.
