Gears of War: E-Day Lands October 6, and Your Game Pass Tier Matters

We have been tracking Gears of War: E-Day since July, when it was still a vague "fall 2026." It now has a hard date: October 6, with early access from October 1 and pre-install opening September 29. The game has gone gold, so the date is real.
There is one detail worth getting right before you plan around it, because Microsoft's subscription tiers have quietly become confusing enough to catch people out.
The Game Pass Trap
E-Day is a day-one Game Pass release, which is true but incomplete. It is included on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass only. It is not included on Game Pass Essential, Game Pass Premium, or the newer Starter tier.
That distinction did not exist in the simpler days when Game Pass was basically one product. If you downgraded to a cheaper tier at some point, or signed up recently on whatever plan was cheapest, check which one you are actually on before October 6. A lot of people are going to open the app expecting a free download and find a storefront instead.

Note that a subscription does not get you in early. The five-day head start is tied to the Premium Edition purchase, not to any Game Pass tier. If playing on day one matters more to you than the money, that is the only route.
What It Actually Is
E-Day is a prequel, set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. You play a young Marcus Fenix alongside Dom Santiago during the first days of the Locust invasion, which the series has referenced for two decades without ever showing. It is a campaign-focused origin story rather than a continuation of the numbered games.
Technically it is built in Unreal Engine 5 and targets 4K at up to 60fps across both campaign and multiplayer. It is on Xbox Series X|S, PC through the Xbox app, and Steam. No PlayStation or Switch 2 version has been announced, which makes it one of the few genuinely Xbox-anchored releases left in a year where Microsoft has been putting most things everywhere.
It Is Not the Only Thing This Week
The back half of September turned into one of the busiest stretches of the year, and E-Day is arriving into a crowd:
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC. If you never played it, this is the version to start with. If you did, the honest question is whether you want to spend another hundred hours in it.
- Minecraft Dungeons II landed September 28, day one on Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere. The family-friendly pick of the week.
- Ace Combat 8 continues a series that has never really had a bad entry.
- Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered for anyone who wants exactly what that says.
October Keeps Going
Game Pass has already confirmed nine day-one titles for October, with E-Day the headliner on the 6th, Keeper on the 2nd, Echo Weaver and Neon Abyss 2 on the 8th, and more through the month. For anyone weighing whether Game Pass Ultimate earns its keep, October is a strong month to test it against. Nine day-one releases is well past the point where a subscription beats buying, assuming you would have bought even two of them.

The Bottom Line
- On Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass? Do nothing. Pre-install on the 29th, play on the 6th.
- On Essential, Premium, or Starter? You are not covered. Decide whether to upgrade or buy before the 6th rather than discovering it that morning.
- Want it on day one? The Premium Edition is the only way in on October 1, and no subscription substitutes for it.
- Not an Xbox player? There is nothing to wait for. No other platform has been announced.
