Best Console for GTA 6: Which One to Buy Before November 19

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on Thursday, November 19, and for a lot of people it will be the reason they finally buy a current console. That is a $500 to $800 decision made in the most expensive year for game hardware in a long time, so it is worth getting right.
Here is the short version: for most people, the answer is a PS5. The rest of this guide explains why, who should pick something else, and what else you need so launch night does not end with a "not enough storage" message.
Where You Can Play It
- Yes: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S.
- No: PS4 and Xbox One. There is no last generation version.
- No: Nintendo Switch 2.
- Not yet: PC. Rockstar has not announced a PC date. For context, GTA V reached PC about a year and a half after it launched on consoles, so PC players hoping to wait it out could be waiting a long time.
Every Option at Today's Prices
| Console | Price | Storage | Verdict for GTA 6 |

| PS5 (disc drive) | $549.99 | 1TB | Best if you buy physical games |
| PS5 Pro | $749.99 | 2TB | Best looking, no disc drive |
| Xbox Series S 512GB | $499.99 | 512GB | Avoid, storage is too tight |
| Xbox Series S 1TB | $599.99 | 1TB | Only if you want Xbox and a small budget |
| Xbox Series X Digital | $749.99 | 1TB | Only if you are already invested in Xbox |

Prices are US list prices as of October 4, 2026. Sony rolled its spring price increase back on August 21, while Xbox prices went up on August 1, which is how a PS5 Pro ended up costing less than a Series X. Our breakdown of the PS5 rollback covers how that happened.
Best for Most People: PS5
The PS5 Digital Edition at $499.99 costs the same as the smallest Xbox Series S, but it is the far stronger machine and comes with twice the storage. For a game the size of GTA 6, both of those matter.
Pay the extra $50 for the PS5 with a disc drive if you like owning physical copies. A disc can be lent to a friend or traded in later, and physical games are often discounted sooner than digital ones. If you are going to buy GTA 6 on disc anyway, the disc model pays for itself the first time you sell a game you are done with.
PlayStation also has the only official GTA 6 hardware so far: the limited edition controllers covered below.
The Premium Pick: PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro at $749.99 is the most powerful console you can play GTA 6 on, and its PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced tag. It also doubles the storage to 2TB, which is a real advantage this year.
Two honest caveats before you spend the extra $250:
- Rockstar has not said what "Enhanced" means for GTA 6. There is no confirmed 60fps mode on any console, Pro included. Plenty of sites are reporting frame rates as fact. None of it has come from Rockstar.
- The PS5 Pro has no disc drive. If you want to play discs, add the separate PS5 disc drive.
Buy the Pro if you play on a large 4K TV and want the best version of the biggest game of the year. On a smaller or 1080p screen, the standard PS5 is the better use of the money.
When Xbox Makes Sense
GTA 6 plays on both Xbox Series consoles, but at current prices Xbox is hard to recommend to someone buying a console mainly for this game.
- Xbox Series X ($799.99): a great console, but the disc model now costs $50 more than a PS5 Pro, and the Series X Digital Edition at $749.99 costs the same. It makes sense if your friends, your library, and your Game Pass subscription are already on Xbox.
- Xbox Series S 512GB ($499.99): this is the trap. After system files, only about 364GB of the 512GB is usable. Rockstar has not published GTA 6's install size, but open world games of this scale regularly run well past 100GB, and launch patches add more. One or two big games and the drive is full.
- Xbox Series S 1TB ($599.99): the only Series S worth buying this year. It is also the less powerful Xbox, so expect GTA 6 to look noticeably softer here than on a Series X or PS5.
Buy Now or Wait for Black Friday?
This year the calendar is awkward. GTA 6 launches November 19, and Black Friday is November 27, eight days later.
- If you want to play on launch night, buy the console in October or early November. Stock is normal right now, and the PlayStation Store listing includes a 7-day pre-load, so a console that is set up early can have the game downloaded and ready before launch.
- If a week's wait does not bother you, watch the Black Friday ads. Sony has run holiday console promotions in recent years, but nothing has been announced for 2026, and console deals have been scarce in a year when memory costs pushed prices up.
- Do not wait for a GTA 6 console bundle. As of early October, neither Sony nor Rockstar has announced one for the US. If one appears, we will cover it in the Weekly Drop.
What Else You Need on Day One

1. The game itself. GTA 6 is $79.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Both include the 7-day pre-load when bought digitally, which is the easiest way to be playing the minute it unlocks.
2. Storage room. This is the one that catches people. Clear space before pre-loading starts, and if your console is already full of games, add storage now rather than on launch night. Our PS5 SSD guide covers exactly what fits. The short answer is the WD_BLACK SN850P for PS5, the drive officially licensed for the console. Xbox owners need a storage expansion card to play Series games from extra storage.
3. A second controller, or a collectible one. Sony's Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense controllers come in black and white, cost $84.99 each, and launch with the game on November 19. Both support the game's haptic feedback and adaptive trigger effects. The black version is exclusive to PlayStation Direct in the US, while the white one is also sold through participating retailers. Quantities are limited. If you just need a spare, a standard DualSense does the same job.
4. A headset. GTA games live on their radio stations and city noise, and the PS5's Tempest 3D Audio is listed as a supported feature. A decent wireless gaming headset is the cheapest upgrade that changes how the game feels, and it is a good gift for anyone already planning to play.
The Bottom Line
- Best for most people: PS5 Digital Edition, or the disc model if you buy physical games.
- Best looking: PS5 Pro, if you have a 4K TV. Do not buy it on the promise of 60fps.
- Already on Xbox: Series X, or the Series S 1TB on a budget.
- Skip: the Series S 512GB, and any plan that depends on a bundle or a PC version.
- Before November 12: clear or add storage so the pre-load has somewhere to go.
